Pontis is a biotechnology company in the developmental stage focused on biologically driven solutions for oral health. Its first enzyme-based formulation, TARTARASE, prevents and disrupts dental calculus accumulation by targeting the biological root of tartar formation.
The Problem Tartar Posses
Dental plaque is a complex biofilm primarily composed of extracellular DNA, proteins and calcium. Over time, this matrix hardens into tartar, or calculus, creating a persistent surface that accelerates inflammation and disease.
Current solutions focus on mechanical removal rather than biological prevention, limiting at-home oral health solutions’ efficacy. This creates the need for professional intervention, which is rarely used at the cadence required to prevent oral health complications. This had led to a high prevalence (42.2%) of periodontitis among adults in the U.S. (age 30+).
TARTARASE - Targeting Tartar's Structure
Pontis is taking a biological approach – using naturally occuring enzymes to selectively target and breakdown the very DNA and proteins that serve as tartar’s structural rebar. By dismantling tartar’s rebar, we can remove it.
Tartarase is protected by granted patents in the U.S and Canada, with international filings underway.

TARTARASE has been evaluated in a peer-reviewed, head-to-head, in-vivo 4 week study that demonstrates its ability to remove tartar accumulation: Pontis’ enzyme formulation reduced total tartar by 40% on average, compared to a crest control group who saw a 12% increase in tartar.
